The Return Of HUGO!

Here's the post I promised a couple of weeks ago. Better late than never.

A few weeks ago, me and my family took a weekend trip to the New Philadelphia area of Ohio. I spent all day Saturday at a scrapbooking crop while my wife and son spent the day shopping at the local Amish places. Sunday we went to the Riverfront Antique Mall. They had some nice toys and books that I was looking at. Then about halfway through, there he was! HUGO, Man Of A Thousand Faces! Sitting on the top shelf in a glass case. He'd been marked down to $32.00. After I got the OK from my wife, he was mine.Sitting right next to him was a 1970's Ideal Jaws Game for $45.00. Unfortunately my wife said no. Hugo has about half of his disguise pieces and glue residue on his face. But, he still has the box! It's a little beat up, but it's there. I think I got a pretty good deal.

What a wonderful find. A shame that all the pieces aren't there, however it sure is a nice feeling to discover stuff like this especially when we're not exlusively looking for it.How sad you need your wife's approval. I hope she can understand that having a hobby and interest (within reason) can be incredibly rewarding and she's lucky you're not a coin collector or racecar enthusiast!

I'm jealous. Hugo is a legend in our family's history. He was the one toy I was banned from playing with when my Grandmother was around. He creeped her out. Actually "creeped" is too small a word. When he was opened on Christmas morning, my Grandma was so scared of him, she left the room demanding he was hidden from view.

I own one of these (without the disguise stuff). I never knew what the heck it was - just thought it was some bizarre toy (which it is, even with all the pieces).

When my friends would come in from out of town for a visit, I would tell their 12 year old son that, for some reason, this toy would move around the house from time to time.

Then, after the kid was asleep, I'd move Hugo from his perch in my family room to about 3 feet from his bed on the floor. The mornings were always amusing, with me answering millions of questions.
