HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

Is it Halloween already? My, how time flies. I had a bunch more music and stuff I wanted to put up before today, but I ran out of October. Oh well, who says it has to be Halloween to listen to spooky music? Here's some trivia from Uncle John's Bathroom Reader --

BOO!

Meaning:
An exclamation used to frighten or surprise someone

Origin: The word comes from Boh, the name of a great Norse general and son of the god Odin. According to ancient legend, he was so fearsome that the very mention of his name struck panic in his enemies.

The tradition of carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns dates back to an 18th-century Irish folktale. A drunkard named Jack happens upon the Devil and traps him in an apple tree. The Devil escapes but never forgives him. When Jack dies he is not accepted into heaven, but hell won't take him, either. With nowhere else to go, Jack is cursed to wander the night, lighting his path with a lit piece of coal inside a hollowed-out turnip. The turnip later became a pumpkin when the tradition reached the United States.

Here's one last song for Halloween --

Zacherley - The Cool Ghoul!

I wasn't aware of Zacherley until I was an adult. But, I've since become a big fan. He's the ultimate in Halloween campiness. I met "The Cool Ghoul" at this years Monster Bash.
I bought his newest CD Interment For Two (2005) and he autographed the cover and the disc.
He also signed a record I brought.
Here's a classic tune from Zach.

Ookla The Mok

Ookla The Mok is a filk band that has been performing at science fiction and comic book conventions since 1994. They bill themselves as Rock Music For Nerds.

I've seen them perform live a couple of times at The Pittsburgh Comicon. I took these photos of them probably five to seven years ago (Sorry about the quality of the pictures.)

A lot of their music is about sci-fi, comic books and other pop culture.

Here's a couple of the monster themed songs they have recorded.

John Williams & The Boston Pops

I'm a huge fan of John Williams. It all began with a little movie called Star Wars. I first saw it when I was 10 years old in 1977 and haven't been the same since. I love the music of Star Wars and started looking for other soundtracks by Mr. Williams. That lead me to The Boston Pops. I searched through all the John Williams & The Boston Pops CD's that I have (about 10) and found these three spooky tracks. Enjoy.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

I just found out that Disney is releasing a two disc special edition version of Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack. Disc two features songs from the movie rerecorded by rock and pop stars and some demo songs by Danny Elfman. Marilyn Manson on a Disney CD? What's this world coming to. I might just have to buy this.

Danse Macabre

This track is from a CD called Arthur Fiedler * Boston Pops - Pops Concert (RCA 1987). Here's what it says in the liner notes:

Saint-Saëns' Danse Macabre (originally a song) gives a faithful orchestral narration of the events of a Henri Cazalis' poem describing what happens in a cemetary when "Death plays a dance tune, Zig and Zig and Zig, on his fiddle." Harp notes betoken the tolling of midnight, and then Death tunes his fiddle--in the minor; use of harmonicas in the orchestra's strings lends eeriness to the tuning, and the xylophone creates an effect of skeletons stealing forth and waltzing. With the voice of the oboe, one hears the cock crow his signal of dawn--and the skeletons scamper away and are quiet.
