Star Wars Illustrated: The Empire Strikes Back Trading Cards

Here's a description of the cards from Topps.com --

See ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ drama like never before with Topps Star Wars Illustrated: The Empire Strikes Back. Each base card uses brand new artwork to re-tells the radio drama from unique and interesting vantage point. This set adds new background and expands on key scenes from the film. Insert cards include One Year Earlier, Movie Poster Reinterpretations, and The Mission: Capture Skywalker.

Hits Include:
  • Film Cel Relics from The Empire Strikes Back
  • Sketch Cards
  • Panorama Sketch Cards
  • Artist Autographs
  • Sketchagraphs
  • Printing Plates

I was buying packs of these cards a couple at a time from my local comic book shop (Kenmore Komics) for the past few months. I hadn't got any of the big hits until a couple of weeks ago when I bought the last three packs he had.

Sketch card of the Millennium Falcon in the asteroid field by Daniel Benitez and Arturo "JAR" Ramirez (not sure why it took two people to draw this).

Film Cel Relic #FR-2 Back at Echo Base. It's hard to see the film cel in my scan. It's real close to the picture of Han Solo I captured from an online video.

Stuff I Got For Christmas Part 2

Sorry it took so long for this post. I've been deathly ill for the past week. But, I'm feeling much better now. :)

Here's the rest of the non-Hulk pop culture stuff I got for Christmas. Everything is from my wife unless noted.

2011 Diamond Select Frankenstein figure, ReAction Freddy Krueger and a skull sucker.

Snow Miser and Heat Miser Funko Pop! figures.
Rudolph and Bumble notepads.

Mystery Minis! Nebula from GOTG and Loki and Thanos from Marvel.
Loki is 1/144 and Thanos 1/72. Both rare figures!

 Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments.
Frano Harris "The Immaculate Reception" and The Legendary Leg Lamp.

Star Wars Imperial Cherry Sours, Jelly Belly Galaxy Mix,
Yoda Lightsaber Lip Balm and KISS playing cards.

Books! The Nearly Complete Essential Hembeck Archives Omnibus, Comic Books 101 and two Peanuts hardcover books from the late 1960s.

Seven packs of Stupid Heroes, one pack of Heroes and two packs of Mars Attacks Invasion from my wife. Two packs of Star Wars Galaxy 7 from my brother.

 Yay! Stupid Heroes sketch card!
Butter Boy by Neil Camera.

My son bought me the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and the first two Hobbit movies on blu-ray. I haven't seen the Hobbit movies yet.

I also got two more t-shirts. But, they're in the dirty laundry and I didn't feel like digging them out. Superman logo from my wife and Guns 'n Roses from a fellow co-worker.

Non-geeky stuff I got: lounge pants, slippers, blanket, knee brace, assorted candies and a bacon press!

All in all it was a pretty great holiday!

Akron Comicon 2014 Review Part 3: Stuff I Bought

I go to these comic book shows and never buy any actual comic books! Haha! Here's what I did pick up:

Hulk Marvel Universe figure, Hulk String Doll and one KISS trading card.

The original art for Hulk Annual #17 (1991), page 18. Story: Subterranean Wars (Part II) - As Old as the Hills. Written by Peter David, penciled by Ron Wagner, inked by Mike Witherby.
Inker Mike Witherby had a stack of original art for $25 each. He had two pages from this issue and I liked this one better. Even though it doesn't actually feature the Hulk, it does have Rick Jones, Mole Man and Tyrannus. I'm gonna have to glue the word balloons back on.

Animation cel from the 1995-96 Savage Dragon cartoon. Bought from Art-Toons.

Painter Smurf production drawing from the 1980s Smurf cartoon. Also bought from Art-Toons.

Acroyear from the Micronauts sketch card by artist Carter Allen.

Knifehead from Pacific Rim sketch greeting-card by Carter Allen. I won this sketch at his table.

My Free Comic Book Day and More!

Here's a recap of my amazing Free Comic Book Day. It was quite the road trip. We hit seven different comic shops in about eight hours. It rained a couple of times, but we mostly had nice weather.

Here's all of the free comics I got. Mostly this year's books with a few from past years thrown in.

Some of the other free stuff I got. Temporary tattooss, pins and a sucker.

Here's some stuff I got before FCBC started. Friday night I went to Ollie's Bargain Outlet and found this Hulk and Wolverine two pack. And the Hot Wheels Enterprise my brother found at K-Mart and gave it to me Saturday morning.

Here's our nerdly crew. Me in the Wolverine shirt. My brother Scott (Iron Man shirt) and his son (Fantastic Four shirt). Our friend Kathy (Transformers shirt), her daughter (Deadpool shirt) and her friend (non-comic related shirt).

First stop Kenmore Komics & Games.

Kenmore is my regular comic shop, so I picked up a couple of my new books and a couple of packs of Marvel Universe 2014 trading cards.

I pulled a sketch card from one of the packs. Silver Surfer by artist Marcelo Ferreira.

Second stop The Toys Time Forgot.

Cat burglar?

Third stop Heroic Adventures.

Fourth stop Quaker Square News Stand.

I met artist Carter Allen. His website Candle Light Press.

I bought a Megalon sketch card from Mr. Allen.

Fifth stop JC Comics & Cards.

JC the owner.

I bought The Essential Luke Cage: Power Man Vol. 2.

Sixth stop Off The Wagon.

Seventh stop Collector's Palace.

Collector's Palace mascot.

I bought a Palisades Micronauts Time Traveler Dynamic Forces Exclusive and five packs of cards.

On our way home. What a fun day!

Later that night, my wife and I stopped at Goodwill and I bought some books. They were all 1/2 off. I paid around $2.40 for all of them.

Hembeck Horrors

I've been a fan of Fred Hembeck's cartoony drawings and squiggly knees ever since he got into the comic business in the late 70s. He's still drawing and selling sketch cards on eBay. He posts everything he draws on his Facebook page and that's where I found these monster sketches. I've broken up the sketches into different groups and will make a few "Hembeck Horrors" posts this month.

You can find more Hembeck on these sites:
Facebook
eBay
Website

The first group is classic monsters.

Bride of Frankenstein

Frankenstein's Monster

Godzilla

Hammer's Frankenstein monster

I Was a Teen-Age Frankenstein

I Was A Teen-Age Werewolf

Invisible Man

Mummy
The Thing From Another World

Tor Johnson (Plan 9 From Outer Space)

Werewolf

Young Frankenstein
